Proceeds From New Crystal Enhanced Dog Tag Support The National Military Family Association
Scottsdale, AZ June 23, 2003 – Since the early 1900's soldiers have been wearing military dog tags to help identify them should they be killed at war. During the 1960's, "civilians" wore the dog tags to show their patriotism and public support for the brave men and women who were fighting for our country. Today, there's an innovative and exciting spin to the historic dog tag that represents the future of America rather than focusing on the dangers of war and terrorism. And, a portion of proceeds from every necklace sold will be donated to the National Military Family Association.
Jennifer Forman, an internationally recognized sculptor, artist and jewelry designer, has created the new patriotic necklace, which couples a brilliantly clear, rectangular Swarovski crystal stone with an authentic military dog tag. "I didn't want to design just another piece of commemorative wartime jewelry," explains Jennifer, who has been creating fashion accessories using Swarovski crystals for the past 12 years.
"Instead, I wanted to develop something that would convey a variety of the positive images that I was discussing with my children when Operation Iraqi Freedom began… like the promising future of our country and the power and strength of America," she says. "Being a mother myself, I also wanted to contribute in some way to those in the military and their families. When I discovered the important work of the National Military Family Association, and how the organization benefits all of the uniformed services, I knew it would be a perfect fit."
The new dog tag necklace is quite versatile and can be worn in several different ways. Both the tag and the chain (which is 24" long) are stainless steel, exactly like those worn by our soldiers. Customers have a choice between a tag that is embossed with a patriotic sentiment (i.e. "God Bless America" or "America Will Shine On"), a personal identification (i.e. the customer's name along with any other pertinent information) or they can request a dog tag that features a vibrant, full-color American flag. The Swarovski crystal can either rest right on top of the tag, or it can be worn alone (for a more formal look) simply by sliding the tag off of the chain.
Another option for a more authentic,military "dog tag" look is to place the dog tag itself or a second crystal on a shorter 2" chain and attach it to the longer crystal necklace (soldiers in the military wear two dog tags in this exact manner…one is placed on a 24" chain and the other hangs from it by a 2" chain).
"While the dog tag signifies the seriousness of war and the challenges our country has faced since 9/11, the Swarovski crystal represents faith, optimism, freedom and the "clear" vision we all share regarding the bright shining future of our country," says Jennifer. "Wearing the crystal along with the military dog tag is not only a fashion statement of the times, but it is a statement of pride, patriotism, and the never-ending spirit of the American people. It's about believing in a promising future for all Americans and the importance of looking ahead."
When people see others wearing the crystal dog tag necklace, Jennifer hopes it will create a common bond between them and a universal understanding of its meaning. "This necklace is symbolic of so many wonderful things about America," she says. "It's all about patriotism, pride and taking the time to realize just how lucky we are to live in a country with so many freedoms, choices and opportunities."
The Swarovski crystal dog tag necklace is $59, which includes the rectangular crystal and a choice of stainless steel tags (either a personalized inscription or the American flag).
